Margery Sanford McFarland

Margery McFarland, a longtime resident of Saratoga, died Monday, May 19, 2008, at Pacific Coast Manor, a nursing home in Capitola. The cause was a complication from pneumonia. She was 88. She had, for a while, lived in Oyster Bay.

Ms. McFarland was born Sept. 25, 1919, in New York City, where her father, Erskine Sanford, was a professional actor on Broadway, helping to start the Theater Guild and later joining Orson Welles and the Mercury Players there and in Hollywood, acting in Citizen Kane and many other films. Her mother, Fanny Howe Sanford, a practicing nurse and teacher of nurses at Columbia University, helped Margaret Sanger launch the foundation that became Planned Parenthood.

Ms. McFarland attended school in New York, Providence, R.I., and Boston, where she trained in ballet, which she loved. In the summer of 1937, she performed with her troupe as part of the popular Boston Pops Orchestra summer concerts on stage in Symphony Hall.

She returned to New York City in the late 1930s to work in the fields of journalism and advertising. There she was chosen to model for a photograph used in a nationwide ad for Camel cigarettes. She also worked with a group of top journalists from Time-Life, Collier's and other leading magazines in the start-up of a short-lived national magazine titled Column. In 1950, McFarland moved to Paris, where she lived for 12 years.

While there, she worked at the Herald Tribune, much of her time devoted to assisting one of its top columnists, Art Buchwald. She returned to New York to live in Oyster Bay on Long Island. She joined Reader's Digest, working in the Manhattan office a number of years. In 1979, she relocated her home to Saratoga, Calif., where she met and married Donald McFarland.

In addition to being an active volunteer in community enterprises such as Villa Montalvo, a historic landmark and arts center; L'Alliance Francaise; and the public library, she always enjoyed dancing, playing tennis, traveling and reading. And she dearly loved cats, having several as lifelong pets.

She is survived by her son, Peter Sanford of Santa Cruz, Calif.; a brother, Adrian Sanford of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

No memorial services are planned. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to L'Alliance Francaise of Santa Clara Valley, P.O. Box 858, Saratoga, CA 95071 or the Humane Society Silicon Valley, 2530 Lafayette St., Santa Clara, CA 95050 (Tax ID #94-1196215).
