The number of children in the youth athletic teams marching in the Monday, May 26 Memorial Day parade gave an indication why this year coaches had to go before the Oyster Bay Town Board asking for fields.
Brian McGee, Little League president, said they have been talking to Supervisor John Venditto who has informed them they will have three new fields coming in the fall, before next season begins. One will be at TR Park and they are re-doing two fields at the Berry Hill Fields/Marino Park.
"They have been very cooperative and let us have a lot of input into the design of the fields," he said.
Although the men are aware that the town has created great sports fields in Massapequa, Hicksville and Syosset, Mr. McGee explained, "This is the first time we actually pressured them for fields. They have been very responsive. The biggest help was letting us have design input." This time they came before the town as the Oyster Bay Athletic Association with the baseball, soccer, lacrosse teams all asking for help. "The heads of the "Four Families" went to town hall, said Mr. McGee.
Mr. McGee said, "They came to us asking about the use of SEA Fund money."
Marta Kane, a town spokesperson said, "We are refurbishing the two fields." She said they are building bathrooms at the Marino Park. They will be landscaping the Marino Baseball field and other improvements will also be made. They include landscaping and lighting at the existing parking lot on Park Place.
