After a tough loss to Mineola last week, the Rough Riders fifth-grade team squared off against Oceanside beating them 6 to 4.
There was strong midfield play from Mat Defeo (1 goal/ 2 assists), Conor McAuliffe (1 assist), Justin Ozkan (1 assist), Jack Sherbal, Ryan Hauser (1 assist), Thomas Reynolds (1 assist), Louis Pillari (1 goal), James Testa, Mike Castrogiovanni, Chris Pappas, Harrison LaBranche, and Jack Daly. The middies utilized their speed to move the ball into the offensive zone the entire day. The entire midfield squad also forced numerous offensive opportunities by causing many ground ball situations with well placed stick checks.
A tough defense was played by Jackson O'Neill, Nicholas Orlowski, Nathaniel Atherholt, Chris Jespergard, and Teddy Morales who made Oceanside earn every goal. Eamonn Conway did a great job in the cage with 14 saves.
Attackmen Jack Puccio, Tyler Reynolds (4 goals), Thomas Carchietta (lead the team with eight ground ball pickups), Mat Butler, Luke Wade, and Paul Vomvas had numerous shots on goal, and rode Oceanside as they tried to transition to offense.
The fifth-grade Lady Riders team played away against Farmingdale on Saturday, April 5 on a beautiful spring day. The girls gathered around their coaches at the start of the game. Head coach, Theresa Wygand and assistant coaches, Diana Hauser and Laura Sommi led the girls in an opening cheer.
At the half the score was tied 6-6. Goals were scored by Olivia Ballone, Nicole Hauser, Casey McConnell and Brooke Sommi. Nicki Stanco and Grace Wygand had 2 goals each. Megan Fives started out as goalie and had 9 saves. Zoe Gutterman took over as goalkeeper at the half and had 6 saves. Nicki Stanco, Brooke Sommi and Casey McConnell were groundball hogs and did a great job of grabbing the groundballs. Caileen O'Keefe, Jillian Tiberia, Brooke Stapelton, Megan McGuckin, and Samantha D'Aversa played great on defense. The final score was Oyster Bay 8 and Farmingdale 11. The girls all showed tremendous improvement with their 2nd game of the season.
Congratulations to the sixth-grade Roughrider Lacrosse team as it raised its record to 2-0 with a 8-3 victory over Bellmore on April 6. It was a total team effort. The offense was led by Sean Cerrone (3 goals/2 assists), Collin Martinez (2 goals/1 assist), Ryan Curran (2 goals/1 assist), and Gregory Galligan (1goal/2 assists) - phenomenal! The defense was provided by Michael Ruane, Malcolm Flynn, Mikey Schuler, and Brandon Perez and the outstanding goal tending duo of Matt DiConza and Conner Merritt. There were excellent passing/groundballs by Patrick O'Brien, Mark Stutzmann, Stephen Ferrandino, Devin Victory, and William Sheeline who contributed to the victory.
The 7th/8th grade Rough Rider boys Lacrosse team is off to a 2 - 0 record with a decisive 7 - 1 win over Floral Park on Sunday, April 6. The offense led by the strong midfield play of Blake Meyer and Kyle Cronauer, each with 1 goal, kept the ball in Floral Park's end of the field most of the day. The attack was once again keeping the opposing defense busy by generating many shots that led to Zach Greenspan's hat trick and adding 2 more goals for Michael Maloney's hot start this year.
The strong offensive play of Keegan Petersen, Bobby Maddia and Kyle McLaughlin cannot overshadow the way the defense, once again led by Michael Ferris shut down Floral Park's offense. Andre Flammia and Jacob Atherholt for the second week in a row played a tight controlled defense.
Danny Rivas spent most of the game between the pipes as a spectator, but when called upon to play made spectacular saves. Danny was quick with his clears and ventured out almost unchallenged to the midfield line on a few occasions.
