On Saturday, Nov. 10, The Oyster Bay High School Cross Country team competed in the New York State finals. Joe Jazwinski and Katelyn Collins were both tops from Long Island class C schools. Katelyn was among the top 25 in the state and Joe was in the top 30. The Baymen finished 9th out of 11 teams, which is the best they have ever done. This rarely occurs. All seven boys on the team ran their best race of the season
On Sunday, Nov. 4, the Cross Country Team was the only division 4b team to finish in the top five of the conference meet. This is true for the boys and girls teams. It's been approximately 10 years since the Boys' team last made the states. The last time the girls made it was over 15 years ago.
Individual accomplishments include all conference runners Joe Jazwinski, Justin Nakrin and Chris Poelker for the boys; and Katelyn Collins and Fiona Brunner for the girls. Joe and Katelyn were both 3rd place overall in the conference. Unfortunately, Fiona Brunner hurt her ankle and was not able to go to the states.
The top four boys are very talented and have been putting in up to 45 miles per week in preparation. Since the fifth runner is the last scoring person in a meet, the biggest obstacle has been getting the fifth man's time down. Chris Tzanavaris, first time cross country runner and sprinter by nature, has been there to answer the call, which made it possible for the Baymen to finish an undefeated season.
The Baymen boys cross country team clinched the division title going undefeated in inter-division competition. Coach Kevin Cotter is very proud to have ended Wheatley's 5-year run as champions.
In the Nassau County Coaches Invitational held on Oct. 20, Oyster Bay High School Junior Katelyn Collins took first place beating a field of 80 runners.
The future looks bright for the Cross Country program at Oyster Bay with strong performances on the 7th and 8th grade level as coached by Kristen Larke.
Steven Tortora ran undefeated in the last three cross country meets. Stephen ran the distance of 1.5 miles. He has also broken the 7 & 8 grade course record at two schools.
Brooke Mohaski is also an eighth grade cross-country runner who has shown great improvements. She started off the season as one of five girls on the team. She is currently the only female on the 7 and 8 grade cross country team. She works hard everyday and deserves some recognition for all of her hard work and dedication.
