The first league game was played at the Long Island Junior Soccer Field in Plainview where the Oyster Bay Tornadoes faced the Levittown Killer B's. The last time these two teams faced each other was last fall at Vernon School. The Killer B's were the only team that the Tornadoes lost to 1 to 0. Separating the two teams was the Tornadoes' loss and the Killer B's with a tie. This was the first game of the season with both teams moving up in division, it was the Tornadoes turn to reciprocate the results.
The coaches, trainers and parents from both sides remembered their last encounter and were very anxious to see which team improved most over the winter months. The Tornadoes worked extremely hard practicing twice a week with the only break during the Christmas vacation. The hard work paid off, Mollie Sullivan received a nice lead pass from our midfield and challenged the Killer B's goalie with a solid shot from the left side of the field. Tornadoes 1 Killer B's 0.
The Titan's opened their spring season with great hope after a tough 1-0 elimination to exit the Waldbaums Cup. "The teams at this level are strong, committed teams and there will be no easy victories" said trainer Dave Bond. Prior to the start of the match the Titans learned that keeper Gavin Esernio was ill with stomach cramps and would try and play. He would have to with Ivan Bonilla as the only back-up with experience was not in attendance. Justin Zeth is in Italy on a school trip and Kabir Melwani away. The Titans would play with a sick keeper and only one sub. It turns out Eastport would not have any subs. The Titans led the attack for the first half. At the 23rd minute Christian Petersen had a shot off a corner kick that was deflected just under the cross-bar and over the net by Eastport's 6 foot keeper Eric Houney. Jonathan Leonardo was pushed down in the box 4 minutes later but no foul was called. Thomas Treiber, Daneel Reif, Jose Lopez, Andy Rubio and Colin McKay were slugging it out for possession .The half ended knotted and zero. The second half the Titans were out of sorts and it took them some time to get going. Chris Murdock had his head on almost every ball sent his way, Alex Selesky did great playing out of position and Harry Nicastro was awaking to make his presence known. New recruit Guisseppe Del Vecchio added to the solid defense. The Titans suffered a costly mistake at almost the same point of the game as last week. The Titans errant attempt to clear the ball from their end was painful as the ball found its way into the Titans goal. That would be the margin of victory for Eastport. The Rockets cheered and the Titans were left in their own sorrows.
The Titans travel to Ellwood in two weeks to take on the Fireballs.
