The Oyster Bay Railroad Museum was central to the Victorian Holiday in Downtown Oyster Bay Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16 and 17. It took a good portion of two weekends to install the overhead lights and Christmas decorations for the Oyster Bay Railroad Museum that was open for the weekend.
The station looked beautiful outside and was well-lit inside when the members of Long Island N-TRAK and the Great South Bay Model RR Club showed up at 8 a.m. to set up their fabulous displays. In all, four displays were set up. A huge modular N scale layout; a smaller N scale layout; a two-sided module (also N scale) which depicted Sunnyside yards on one side and Oyster Bay on the other; and a Lionel 0-27 layout which the kids were able to interact with.
All of the members had their trains up and running by 11:30 a.m. and just before noon the first wagonload of people came in to visit.
The OBRM held a raffle which included an HO-scale train set, a large-scale train set which our member Steve Ford of Willis Hobbies donated, various gift baskets expertly crafted by OBRM Secretary Judy Wasilchuk; including a very large gift basket of wines which was donated by trustee Gary Farkash.
Rebecca Beers, a student at the John Street School in Franklin Square, won the North Pole Central Christmas Train donated by Steve Ford of Willis Hobbies. Her dad is Wayne Beers, a hard-volunteering member of the OBRM.
For two days the weather was beautiful and quite warm. The horse-drawn carriage kept arriving with people of all ages who really appreciated the opportunity to visit the fledgling museum. They served apple cider and gave out candy canes to the children. Even the horse, Duke, ate a few!
The highlight for the museum volunteers was when they heard the children exclaim that the layouts were "awesome."
A thousand times thank you - to the great people from L.I. N-Trak, Great South Bay Model RR Club, Oyster Bay Main Street Association and the Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce and the Oyster Bay Civic Association. This was truly an "awesome" weekend.
