Alex Mitchell, son of the late Sidney and Mary Mitchell of Matinecock Locust Valley, died at his home on St. Helena Island, SC, on Nov. 4, 2006. He worked for Price Waterhouse and later purchased the Scovil Hoe Company which appealed to him because the factory was water powered and the hoes basic simple tools. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed pheasant hunting and horses, but his great love was the sea and the wooden boats that sailed on it.
He had built a traditional New England gaff-rigged catboat named Prudence which he cruised in and occasionally raced during summers of LI. In the early seventies he purchased a ketch named Island Belle that he kept in Grenada and sailed throughout the Grenadines. His extensive marine library is being donated to the Maine Maritime Academy. In his early '70s he had a hand in building a sailing skiff which he launched with great fanfare from his front lawn of St. Helena. Everyone who knew him enjoyed the stories he told and his dry wit.
Alex was a graduate of Greenvale School, Deerfield Academy and Yale University. He was a past member of the Piping Rock Club, Connetquot Sportsman's Club and a life member of Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. He served as president of the Matinecock Neighborhood Association Zoning Board.
He is survived by his wife Sally and his five children by a previous marriage, Jennifer, Robert, Diana, Stephen and Laura and eight grandchildren.
A funeral reception was held Nov. 8.
