How Well Do You Know the Area?
Do you know where this week's picture was taken? If you do, call the Enterprise-Pilot at 747-8282 and let us know. If you have a picture that you think might be interesting for others to guess, drop it off in our box at Raynham Hall Museum, 20 East Main St., Oyster Bay.

Jack Hutchinson called to say, "The mystery picture in the Oct. 19 issue, is taken from the Nantucket heading east toward the boat ramps at TR Memorial Park."

Macy Yu also knew the location as did Billy Minicozzi.

We received an interesting phone call from Jim Mills, a former resident of Oyster Bay who called about the Sept. 21 mystery photo. Mr. Mills, a resident of Jupiter, Florida was in Cape Cod and his mail got to him via his winter address - to explain the delay.

The mystery photo had some personal history to it so he called the Enterprise Pilot. He said, "It looks like well back in the '40s and '50s - it looks like Steve Richters Ford agency. I worked there when I was 19 - I'm 74 now. I married Jane Kraft, a daughter of Jessica Kraft. She was named Jessica but was known as Jane. She was Jessica J. Mills. She is the sister of Barbara Kraft Comstock. My wife died in 1991. I retired in 1990."

Mr. Mills lives in the Jupiter area, where Madeline Bonasia and John DeJesu and several other Oyster Bay retirees live. Mr. Mills said, "Louise Platt of Bavyille and Alice and Joe Horan live there. Alice was Alice Fogelstrum and she graduated from Oyster Bay High School also. I graduated in 1949: 1849 was the year of the Gold Rush so they called us 'The 49'ers'. At the last reunion in 1999, Ed Mehan showed us around the school and the new gymnasium. The only person I recognize in the newspaper anymore is Marie Knight - Marie Ferrara."

Mr. Mills talked about his mother-in-law for whom his wife was named - Jessica Kraft. "My mother-in-law was the bookkeeper at the Roosevelt house, Sagamore Hill. She was its first curator before it became a national shrine. When Jane and I were going to the senior prom Mrs. Roosevelt said she wouldn't hear of it if we went without seeing her first. We had to allow an hour extra all dressed up in our tuxedo and gown. We had a 20 minute to half hour chat with her. She was a very gracious lady."

He said of Mrs. Kraft, "I had the greatest mother-in-law in the world. There were no mother-in-law jokes in my house!"

And the conversation returned to the mystery photograph. He said, "I recognized it instantly when I saw the picture and said - look at those cars from the 40s."

There's no mystery to the fact that many people remember Oyster Bay fondly. - DFK
