Two stories in this edition of the Oyster Bay Enterprise Pilot relate to one another: the upcoming meeting of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as they consider the possibility of having a satellite office in Oyster Bay to oversee the Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge and the Friends of the Bay request for the town and other local municipalities to work together in implementing watershed-based planning.

With the Western Waterfront plan being implemented, there is more planning needed to complete the work of our waterfront areas. The Eastern Waterfront was defined in the grant application for a study as going from the boundary of the Eastern Waterfront all the way east to the Oyster Bay Cove line, and north to Audrey Avenue/East Main Street. It includes Theodore Roosevelt Park.

Friends of the Bay is encouraging the Town of Oyster Bay and other local municipalities to work together in implementing watershed-based planning that will enhance existing plans such as the 2002 Oyster Bay Hamlet Plan and the 2002 Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Complex Harbor Management Plan and will help shape future planning that's ahead for the Hamlet's Eastern Waterfront.

We agree that an overall plan should be created since what happens here will impact the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Complex and the National Oyster Bay Wildlife Refuge Complex.

We have a great resource here at our doorstep. We must all take responsibility for preserving it - and to be sure we appreciate and enjoy what it gives to us. It is a two-way street - something that is important when you receive a gift. It is there for you to enjoy - you must be there to preserve it.
