This summer, the Incorporated Village of Bayville will be helping Raynham Hall Museum and the Town of Oyster Bay to erect an historically accurate reconstruction of a picket fence and entrance gate in front of the landmark house museum on West Main Street in Oyster Bay. The fence will be handcrafted, following examples of 18th century fences and gates. The new fence will be supported on locust posts as Colonial period fences originally were.

A grove of small locust saplings stands in the Bayville Preserve, owned by the Village of Bayville, adjacent to West Harbor Drive. The Village trustees have agreed to allow 10 of these saplings to be selectively harvested from the preserve for use in the museum's fence restoration project. Pierre Marchais of Pierre's Tree Service in Oyster Bay has volunteered to cut the saplings and remove all left over branches.

The reconstructed fence was designed by local Architectural Historian John Collins who serves as a trustee of the Friends of Raynham Hall and is coordinating the project on their behalf. Mayor Victoria Siegel recently met with Mr. Collins at the Bayville Preserve to review which saplings were to be harvested. Mayor Siegel said that she was, "Pleased that the Village of Bayville was able to help The Friends of Raynham Hall to accomplish this worthy project."

Raynham Hall is owned by the Town of Oyster Bay and is administered by The Friends of Raynham Hall, a private, not for profit educational organization. Funding for the fence reconstruction is being provided by the Town of Oyster Bay.
