The Oyster Bay High School Girl's Varsity Fencing Team won the Nassau County Championship Saturday, Feb. 4 against three-time defending champs Great Neck North. The Lady Baymen completed a league season of 8 wins and 2 losses, which tied them in second place with Garden City.
After defeating Hewlett in the quarterfinals, Oyster Bay steamrolled over Garden City 14-6, in the semi's Saturday morning. That afternoon it was Oyster Bay vs. undefeated Great Neck North.
At the end of the first round, Great Neck had a 5-4 lead. Through the second round and into the third, O.B. slowly pulled ahead and expanded their lead. Needing one more win, Oyster Bay's Allison Competiello now faced Great Neck's Rebecca Shore. With only three minutes for a bout, these two seniors battled in and out until Shore finally scored the first point after two minutes and 48 seconds. With 12 seconds remaining, Allison Competiello won her point that put the match into a one-minute sudden death overtime. It took 14 seconds for Competiello to score the winning point, giving Oyster Bay a 14-10 victory as Nassau County Champions.
In the final round, Oyster Bay's All Long Island and All Nassau County selections Lauren Van Pamelen in saber and Allison Putterman in foil (40-0 for the season), went undefeated, as well as Nassau County 2nd team selection Allsion Competiello in foil.
Oyster Bay High School hosted the Long Island Championship on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. The Lady Baymen will be facing undefeated Ward-Melville; the Suffolk boys champ who has yet to be determined, will take on Great Neck North.
