Ran Nakajima and Patrick Cobbs, seniors at Oyster Bay High School, have earned the highest award from the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Dance for 2005-2006. The award recognizes students for outstanding achievements in the areas of citizenship, academics and physical education/athletics.
"Ran epitomizes the perfect example of what we as educators try to accomplish in all our students," said John Piropato, OB-EN athletic director. "An exceptional physical education student, Ran moved here from Germany just two years ago and we are amazed at what she has accomplished," Mr. Piropato added. A member of the Student Athlete Leadership Program, Ran had exhibited her leadership skills as co-captain of the varsity softball and tennis teams. She has received all-county recognition in softball and all-division and all-conference status in tennis. She also demonstrated her work ethic by receiving a perfect attendance award.
Patrick was honored for his exceptional physical performance, attitude and leadership qualities in physical education classes and athletics. "Patrick is truly a role model for all students to emulate," observed Mr. Piropato. "He shows exceptional leadership skills not only as captain of the football and wrestling teams but also as a volunteer for the games for the physically challenged and the GAP programs," he continued. Patrick, who received an honorable mention for all-county defensive end, participated in the All-Star game between Nassau and Suffolk schools.
