Michael C. of East Norwich called to identify the mystery picture from the Jan. 26 issue of the Oyster Bay Enterprise Pilot. The young man said, "It's one of the entrances to Planting Fields Arboretum. I've been there lots of times with my family and our dog who is really friendly. And I have to add the Rangers are going to win the Stanley cup this year! Go Rangers!"
The lovely picture was taken by Robert Fitzpatrick of East Norwich.
Billy Minicozzi guessed the picture was a big estate in Centre Island, Mill Neck or Oyster Bay Cove, in the snow. On a sports note he said, "The Pittsburgh Steelers will win the Super Bowl by 10 points over the Sea Hawks." He added, "Good luck to Bayville Fire Chief Eddie Minicozzi Jr. and Second Chief Bobbie Palmer."
"It's Carshalton Gates," said Joyce Taelman. "It's a lovely picture with the snow in the front and the flowers in back. It's the entrance to Planting Fields that is on Chicken Valley Road. The gates were fabricated in 1712 in England and Mr. R.W. Coe erected them on site in 1926. It was restored last year." She said that former Planting Fields Foundation director Lorraine Gilligan still visits the site to say hello to everyone.
"They are the big beautiful gates that I remember from being a kid. They were just restored a year or two ago," said Beatrice Cardinale of Locust Valley.
We also received a correct answer from a young lady who left a phone number but no name. We tried to reach her but were unsuccessful. So for future callers, please leave your name and it is often a good idea to spell your name. We didn't catch the last name of Michael C. from East Norwich, but we thank him for calling. - DFK
