Allison Putterman, a junior at Oyster Bay High School, was a member of the Long Island Division Scholastic Women's Fencing Team, which won a gold medal at the Empire State Games this past summer. She also received a silver medal in the Women's Individual Foil Competition. The 2005 Games were held in the Hudson River Valley at the end of July.
The competition is a multisport event for amateur athletes and is patterned after the Olympic games. It is a recognized State Games Program of the United States Olympic Committee. Residents of New York State initially compete in regional trials. Approximately 6,000 athletes from six regions of the state go on to participate in finals competition.
Ms. Putterman is a three-year starter on the Varsity Womens Fencing Team and has been named their MVP for the past two seasons. She was second in the Nassau County Individual Competition last year, only after losing by one point in a tie-breaking barrage bout. Allison has fenced foil in local, regional, and national competitions, and aside from school, trains with Avant Garde Fencing Club on Long Island and at the Fencers Club in New York City.
