Tornadoes continue undefeated season by beating Island Trees Phyllies at East Woods.
With two games left in the season, the Tornadoes hosted the Island Trees Phyllies at East Woods School. With two Tornadoe players on the sideline due to injuries, they took the field with confidence but respecting their opponent's good record.
Arden Etts, Melissa LaCorte, Julia Cranz, Erika Eisenberg, Gabrielle Albanese and Kristen Maggi did a great job on defense along with Sarah Lewis on goal. Christina Kim, Erin Allen were solid in midfield, Katie O'Brien, Melissa Albanese, Marissa Matarese were great on offense. But the star of the game was Kristie Kelly, by scoring the winning goal on a tremendous effort from the midfield to the goal.
Allison Bliven was injured and Madison Fressle was out sick.
The Tornadoes will play their final game in Syosset.
These players never give up! After losing their first two games of this season they rallied to win the next 5 of 6! Despite our philosophy of winning one game at a time, we secretly wanted to "win out" the rest of the season.
Well another game won last week with the help of four different scorers (second time in two weeks). Leading the charge was Jordan Contreras accompanied by Quinn Mc Quade, Kevin Rubio and Ryan Sommi. We couldn't have succeeded without the support of Luka Martinovic, Matthew DelRosso, Chris Hoffman, Alec Chiappone, Will Duke, and Ryan Gouse.
On the defensive side of the team old reliables Tyler Ozkan, Kyle Cartwright, Liam Gagliano and goalkeeper, Ari Lewis held Franklin Square to a scant 2 goals! The Rockets are currently in second place, trailing only Albertson Killer Bees (whom the Rockets beat 3-1). Our next and final opponent of the fall season is Wantagh/Seaford in Wantagh. The boys are up to the challenge and hope to close the season on a high note and conclude the season with a record of 6 wins and 3 losses.
On Sunday, Nov. 6, the Titans were home to the Freeport Mariners who previously have only allowed just about a goal a game and their defense was tough for the Titans this day also. The refereeing was tight with both teams in check having off sides calls reaching 5 in the first half. The Titans coaching staff had worked the boys hard this week in practice and surprised the team with a few changes in positions.
On defense Jose Lopez and Eerik Helmick switched sides and with Harry Nicastro playing with a sore right foot it added pressure to Alex Gietz and Chris Murdock. The forwards line of Christian Petersen and Horrace Patrick saw Patrick switching with Midfielder Tom Treiber at times and at other all three were up front. As the first half ended at 0-0 it was clear the strong Freeport defense was doing its job. The Mariners utilized a picket fence defense with 5 defender racked in a line, preventing the Titans from getting the ball through. The midfielders would have to get the ball over the defensive line since dribbling through was not working.
Andy Rubio, Jonathan Leonardo, Patrick Sakamoto and Ben Horst worked even harder lugging the ball and sending it into the corners. The Titans knew the defensive battle before them would probably come down to who would score first. Titan keeper Gavin Esernio was sharp with several nice catches and clearing the ball away. At the 20 minute mark of the second half the Titans set up for a corner kick and Andy Rubio launched a ball across the front of the net where Chris Murdock sped in through crowd to head the ball into the back of the net. Cheers rang out not only for scoring the goal, but for the fine execution by Chris Murdock.
"This was a play we have worked on endlessly this year, to use Chris' size and speed to bust through traffic and get his head on the ball. It was picture perfect," noted Titan coach George Esernio. The play got a bit rough with the Mariners being hit with five fouls in a row and plenty of time to play. As it wound down with five minutes remaining the Titans had a flurry of activity in front of Freeport's goal. As close as the ball came to going in, was as close as Freeport keeper Ed Sandoval was from grabbing the ball. The ball took a strange hop about 6 feet in the air and Jonathan Leonardo jumped and butted it in with his head giving Oyster Bay a 2-0 lead. It ended 2-0 and while the Titans did not score with their feet they did use there heads! The Titans will travel to North Shore for a friendly game against the U-16 Vikings on Saturday, then close out the season on the road in Oceanside. The Titans at 4-3-1 for 13 points sit in fourth place with the 3 teams in front of them all having to play 2 to close out their seasons.
