The Tornadoes are girl soccer players under the age of 11 playing travel soccer representing the Oyster Bay East Norwich Soccer Club. Over this past weekend the team played five soccer games at Meadowbrook School in East Meadow. They were placed in a group including teams from Bethpage, Syosset, Merrick, Farmingdale, New Hyde Park, East Meadow and Rockville Centre. Of the five games they played, they won 4 and lost one. They scored 15 goals and only allowed 4, this record allowed them to take sole possession of first place and bringing the big trophy to Oyster Bay.
The team is made up of very talented young players, our top goal scorer was Katie O'brien scoring 6 of the 15 goals. Melissa Albanese scored two goals while taking corner kicks on two separate games (very difficult to do). Christina Kim one of the newest additions to the team scored a few powerful goals. One in particular she scored while her back was toward the opponent's goal and the ball up high in the air, she turned and blasted it into the net. (A spectacular goal). Goals can also be scored by our defensive players, Gabrielle Albanese our sweeper spotted the goalie out of position (too far forward), she took a towering shot from the midfield line over the goalie's head for a goal. Erin Allen being as consistent as she is, also had great games controlling our midfield and scored several goals on Saturday and Monday. Allison Bliven scored against Rockville Centre after stripping the ball from two defensive players and kicking the ball to the back of the net. Marissa Materese and Danielle Maggi (our guest player substituting for Erika Eisenberg due to family obligation) continually stripped the ball away from the opponents and fed the forwards for goals.
Our goalies and defensive players were superb only allowing 4 goals to be scored during the five games played. Madison Fressle and Sarah Lewis our goalies were outstanding guarding the net. Our defensive players consisting of Julia Cranz, Kristen Maggi, Arden Etts, Melissa LaCourte and Gabrielle Albanese were awsome in protecting the Tornadoes half of the field.
One of our players Kristie Kelly was very anxious to get home from a family vacation so that she could help her team with the final game on Monday.
The team entered the American Re-Fuel sponsored soccer tournament as a final tune up before their first game of their fall soccer season which starts on September 10 at East Woods School. They have been practicing since the first week of August and scrimmaging other Oyster Bay East Norwich soccer travel teams.
The young ladies should also be congratulated for winning the Long Island Junior Soccer League sportmanship award last season. This award is given to a team that shows exceptional sportmanship toward their opponents, coaches and referees. They are judged by the LIJSL referees every game they play.
Congratulations Tornadoes, you win your soccer games with exceptional class.
The OB-EN U11 Boys Riptide Soccer Kicked off its season at the American Ref-Fuel Tournament this past weekend. The Riptide team demonstrated amazing skills and endurance throughout the Tournament.
The Riptide played outstanding defense at their opening day's matches. Late goals by their opponents, Levittown and West Islip, decided the final outcome in both games. Riptide's first goal of the season was scored from a powerful shot just outside the penalty area by Jason Velasquez.
The second day opened with East Meadow, a host team, and a goal by Riptide's Matthew Lieber. It was the first goal scored against the East Meadow squad that would eventually win the game and the division. The day finished with a grueling 1 all draw to a relentless Garden City squad that withstood barrage of late game shots by the Riptide. The team's goal was scored by Peter Tricarico. Outstanding defensively were David Milano, Daniel Ianneta, Keyan Cody and stopper Austin Seaman. Leading the late series of Riptide attacks were Andrew Asgeirsson, Stephan Ello, Joseph Tricafico, Brian Levchuck and Hunter Troge.
A Riptide victory on the final day against Rockville Centre capped their successful weekend. The games winning goal was scored by Brian Slivonik, The team's goalie Ian Bozsnyak recorded his first shut out victory. The Riptide team is looking forward to a successful season that begins on the 10th of September.
