OBEN Board Adopts Recommendations On Transportation and Class Ranking
At the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Board of Education meeting, held Feb. 15 at Oyster Bay High School, Cathleen Colvin presented the recommendations of the transportation committee. The committee, which includes community members, administrators and a transportation consultant, has been studying transportation concerns for the past seven months. LINSHA: All Over But the Voting
In just a few months the Long Island North Shore Heritage Area management plan will be ready for municipalities to vote on approving a new vision for the future of this part of Long Island. The Long Island North Shore Heritage Area (LINSHA) Planning Commission held its final public meeting on Feb. 2 at the Planetarium at the Vanderbilt Museum to accept public comments on the Generic Environmental Impact Statement and the LINSHA Management Plan. You can access the draft plan at www.linorthshoreheritagearea.com. The plan is also available at all the public libraries in the LINSHA area, as well as at village and town halls. Port Jefferson Mayor Jeanne Garant called the plan a "blueprint" and a "bible" to make our communities a better place to live.

The Lady Lions of Solomon Schechter High School of Long Island clinched the Independent Private Parochial School Atlhetic League (IPPSAL) varsity basketball championship for the second time in three years with a 36-to-23 win over Lawrence Woodmere Academy (LWA), on Feb. 16. The win capped a 15-2 season, with a perfect 8-0 record in Western Division league play.
Triathlon Experts Speak at GLIR Club
The featured speakers at the Tuesday, March 15 meeting of the Greater Long Island Running Club will be Steve Tarpinian, champion swimmer and triathlete, triathlon coach and writer, and Josephine Piccinic, marathoner, triathlete, coach and cross trainer. Their topic: "Going halfway" (half marathon and half ironman triathlon,) and having fun with cross training, dealing with how athletes can prepare for half marathons and Half Ironman triathlons on a limited time schedule (with work, family etc.), and can utilize cross training as a way to boost their running performance and fun.
