Long Island's top high school ice hockey players are slated to compete in the 9th annual Vytra Cup all-star game on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p.m., at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. The game, known as hockey's "Battle of Long Island," pits stars from the High School Hockey League of Nassau County against those from the Suffolk County High School Ice Hockey League.
Sponsored by Vytra Heath Plans, the New York Islanders and Newsday, the event begins with pre-game ceremonies, followed by the official competition. A mini-game between periods is also scheduled for junior varsity players. An awards ceremony follows immediately after the competition.
"The Vytra Cup is one of many sporting and wellness events that Vytra is sponsoring throughout 2005 to promote healthy lifestyles," said Thomas J. McAteer, Jr., Vytra President and Chief Executive Officer. "We're pleased to join the New York Islanders and Newsday once again in celebrating some of our area‚s most skilled youth athletes."
In addition, a special raffle will be held to benefit All Island Handicapped Sports, a non-profit organization that runs programs for physically challenged children, some of whom compete in the Special Olympics.
Tickets cost $5 each and can be ordered by calling the Nassau league office at (516) 682-0594, the Suffolk league office at (516) 996-4533.
