Pierre Brandt said of the mystery picture from Nov. 4, "The boat is one that comes as a kit. They put it together in two weeks, to assemble and paint. It was there during the Oyster Festival. I was told about it by Richard Hahn who is standing by the boat in the middle of the photograph. On the right side is Clint Smith the former Oyster Bay Harbormaster.
"I worked with Dick Hahn for 30 years. He was working as a draftsman and I was head of maintenance at Powers Chemical. I had 30 men working under me, it was a big job. I retired from there."
Mr. Brandt is correct. The photograph was taken on Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Oyster Festival. The boat is an example of those built during the boat-building project of the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum and the WaterFront Center. Standing beside the boat are, from the left, Paul DeOrsay, CSHWM executive director and Richard Hahn, (who helped at the boat-building) as did Clint Smith who is on the board of the WaterFront Center. Mr. DeOrsay said they will be having another boat-building program as soon as they can.
Billy Minicozzi had the location correct, that it was taken on the site of the Jakobson's Shipyard. On a sports note he said the Mets named William Randolph as their new manager. "He played with the Yankees as both coach and player. He was the third base coach. In the late 80s he helped them win a World Series." He hoped for a Jets win over the weekend.
As to the Bayville Fire Company, he said, "The Haunted House was a huge success and people came from all over Long Island to see it." On a weather note, he added, "I hope the winter is cool and snowy and sunny."
