Terry McDonald called to help solve the mystery-mystery picture from July 8 as well as the July 15 mystery picture. "The July 8 picture that no one knew is from the Memorial Day Parade and the kids are from the Roosevelt School Scouts. They are Meghan, Meghan, Kerry and Alison. The July 15 picture is taken at Oyster Bay High School during the performance of a play." Right!
Jennifer Capozzoli fine tuned the July 15 picture identification saying, "The picture was taken at the Oyster Bay High School auditorium during The Sound of Music." Actually it was during The Boy Friend, but that was very close.
Billy Minicozzi recognized the July 15 photo as being from Oyster Bay. He identified the July 8 photo as, "The Brownie Troop on South Street and East Main Street heading toward Oyster Bay High School." On a sports note he said, "Chaquille O'Neill is going to the Miami Heat. He won three titles for the Lakers. The Mets are tied for second place and hopefully they will make it to first place."
Jack Hutchinson said, "The mystery picture is the stage at the Oyster Bay High School auditorium with a play going on and taken from the balcony. Last week's mystery-mystery picture I missed but it's the Memorial Day Parade at the corner of South Street and Audrey Avenue where the Oyster Bay Coin Gallery is located."
Tom McGee called to identify the July 15 mystery picture. "I graduated from Oyster Bay High School in 2002 and I recognize the picture of the Oyster Bay High School auditorium and the set because I performed and worked on the stage in my high school career for four years. Good luck to Ms. Koevary's summer theater workshop for this year. The mystery-mystery picture is the Brownie Troop at the intersection of South Street and East Main Street in the Memorial Day Parade."
Elfia Presta sent an e-mail saying, "The mystery-mystery photo looks like a picture taken at the Memorial Day parade. It looks like the person taking the picture was standing by the previous Book Mark Café. I'm not sure what is called now [Wild Honey]. The Brownie Troop was heading toward the Oyster Bay High School and behind them in the photo is the Coin Gallery."
John Henig of East Norwich said the mystery-mystery picture was the stage of Oyster Bay High School.
Tanya Orlando further refined the location of the mystery-mystery picture. "It's the intersection of Audrey Avenue and South Street by the Coin Gallery and Carvel is on the other corner and the picture shows the Brownie Troop."
Charlie Bradley of Oyster Bay also recognized the picture as the Memorial Parade on South Street. As for the mystery-mystery picture he said, "It is the right side of the balcony at the OBHS auditorium. I sat up there watching when my kids were going there."
Carol and Jillian Gannon of East Norwich said the mystery-mystery picture was an easy one. "Jillian and I decided it was taken in front of the Coin Gallery. This week's picture is the auditorium of OBHS, looking down from the balcony."
Dorothy Titus of Locust Valley called and said the mystery-mystery picture was the OBHS auditorium. "We've seen many good plays there and are wondering when we'll see more. When are the new seats going in? The other mystery-mystery picture was the Coin Gallery looking toward the new restaurant [Wild Honey] and we also enjoy that!"
OBHS Assistant Principal Frank Imperiale had the answer about the auditorium chairs. A member of the auditorium restoration committee, he said they have been meeting with the architects in regards to the cosmetic features of the restoration which includes the seats, carpeting, plastering, painting, windows, doors, refinishing the wood. That information has been forwarded to the State Department of Education for approval. He said after the spring concerts next year, sometime around April, they will shut down the auditorium down for a few months. They will take out all the chairs so the scaffolding and lifts can come in so the interior work can be done. "We did chose to go with new seats rather than refurbish the old ones. The new ones will be made in the same style," he said. "The problem was with the mechanical parts of the chairs, while they are available now they will be non-existent in two to five years," he said.
"The new chairs will be wider, 17 inches is too narrow for today. The wider chairs will decrease the number of seats by about 100. We will also be able to redo the seating pattern, instead of rows the seats will be in an alternate pattern for better viewing. Acoustics determined some of the decisions. Instead of vinyl leather we're going with cloth to help with the reverberations. The acoustical engineer did a sound evaluation and his recommendations were cloth seats and carpet where possible (not under the seats) but in the aisles; a velour curtain and drapes (as in the original auditorium)."
There wasn't enough money to do the air conditioning of the auditorium but they are cutting the holes in preparation for the vents that will be needed when they are (finally) put in.
Donations are still needed. It costs about $250 for a chair and people have been donating chairs in the name of family members whose names will be installed on a brass plaque. "People have given donations for more lighting instruments," he said. They have already put in an updated electrical system; upgraded the rigging system to the best the building could offer (ideally it would have been up another 18 feet into the stage); upgraded the sound system that he is fine tuning for dead spots. "We are coming down the home stretch," said Mr. Imperiale.
