In the caring community of Oyster Bay-East Norwich, plans for the holiday season include programs to help less fortunate families, senior citizens and disabled individuals. Without this thoughtful generosity, many people could not have a holiday meal; a tradition most of us take for granted.
We all know how important these gatherings are in strengthening ties and giving a sense of unity to a family. This is especially important to those single parents, struggling to keep their families together.
In 2002, more than 150 households and over 100 senior citizens were remembered at Thanksgiving.
Many seniors are lonely at this time and are struggling financially. They appreciate being remembered. Throughout the year, we respond to human needs by helping out when food, clothing, medical or housing emergencies arise.
The Community Social Action Committee of the Interreligious & Human Needs Council works closely with the Youth & Family Counseling Agency to see that all who are in need receive food or food certificates during the Thanksgiving and Holiday season. All donations are channeled through the C.S.A.C. committee and distributed to needy families and individuals.
You can help at the Thanksgiving Food Sharing Program by donating non-perishable food of such items as canned meats, vegetables and soup; beans, pasta, rice, stuffing; spaghetti sauce, macaroni and cheese dinner, cereal; fruit juice; peanut butter and jelly; baby food; pancake mix and syrup; puddings and Jello; cake mix and frosting. The foodstuffs can be dropped off at the First Presbyterian Church at 60 East Main Street on Monday, Nov. 24 from noon to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Volunteers are also needed to help on both days. You can call 922-2054 for information.
If you would like to provide for a specific family, you must first contact Shirlee Gerstein at the YFCA at 922-6867.
