The mystery picture of the Sept. 25th issue was solved by Lenore Smith who said, "It's the front gate at Planting Fields Historic State Park!" She knows, since she is on the staff at Coe Hall.
There were several good guesses, including an e-mail from Levon Ashby asking, "Could it be the flag pole in Theodore Roosevelt Park? If so the landscape around the pole has changed. It was once only grass."
Billy Minicozzi guessed the Oct. 2nd picture was a house in Oyster Bay or Oyster Bay Cove. On a sports note, he said, "The Yankees will play in the World Series against the San Francisco Giants. The Yankees will win with six games."
Sandra Hunt e-mailed her guess for Sept. 25 as the entrance to Theodore Roosevelt Park by the train station.
Ellen Minet gave a full explanation of the mystery picture. She said, "I recognized it as the back of the kiosk at the entrance to Planting Fields. You see it when you go out, so people may not recognize it. I do the roses so I'm always over there," she said. "The greenhouse staff put in coleus and big potted plants."
Ms. Minet and her care of the roses at Planting Field Historic State Park have been made accessible to the public through a DVD documentary about her work. It is an educational approach, following the seasons using photographs and ending with instructional graphics on how to take care of roses. "It was fun to do. It was totally unscripted," said Ms. Minet. It was done by Kate Daley and Mark Ledzuabm. Their company is N9International. The film is called Secrets of a Rose Gardener.
Ms. Minet is retired from her job of 28 years as a music teacher in the Locust Valley School District.
Joe Williams e-mailed his guess, that the picture in the Oct. 1 issue looks like Roosevelt Park; the middle area between the Picnic fields and the softball fields.
We also received a great e-mail from Todd Bonanza. He said, "How hilarious! For fun, I decided to try to look up my own name on Google, expecting to come up empty. To my surprise, I found a reference to me in your newspaper's mystery photo (Mr. Siegelman-is he still alive?- He really was an excellent teacher, despite choosing me to play Col. Von Trapp in our 4th grade production of The Sound of Music) as well as a family connection to the previous week's Mystery Photo (Bonanza's Stand, aka Chinks). Thanks for a good laugh...or two!! Oyster Bay was a great place to grow up! God Bless you!"
Speaking of Mr. Richard Siegelman, he called last week to add two names to an old mystery picture. He is enjoying his retirement and is looking through his collection of school papers. He visited the school after opening day and had lunch with friends at the school.
Last week's picture remains unsolved.
