Last week's photo was answered by Virginia Slutter. "I came by and saw that scene." She knew it was taken at the Boys & Girls Club of Oyster Bay-East Norwich. The photograph was taken by Robert Fitzpatrick of East Norwich.
Elizabeth Tiyaloglu made an interesting guess. She said it was taken behind the Vernon School, at their basketball hoops area.
Dave Fischer said, "It's the basketball court by the Boys & Girls Club. It is visible on Pine Hollow Road, and visible from Park Avenue too," he said.
Evelyn Gruber said, "It is the basketball court of the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Boys & Girls Club building. It was during their summer camp when they were tie-dying their shirts and putting them out in the sun to dry."
Carrie Koval too recognized the picture. "I know that fence, around the basketball court and the shirts being tie-dyed."
Billy Minicozzi recognized the location too. He added on a sports note that the Jets lost their first game of the year. "They will play Miami next and hopefully they will win." He added, "The kids are back at school and the parents are happy."
Another e-mail from a long distance reader on the Internet said in her e-mail, "Hi, my name is Beverly Evans. I used to live at 15 Maxwell Ave. in Oyster Bay: since 1956. I graduated from Oyster Bay High School in 1975." (She identified an earlier mystery picture of an Oyster Bay harbor photograph.)
Debbie Beardsley was another caller who identified the picture of the children at the Boys & Girls Club dancing. She recognized the lattice in the background and said, "It even looks like the floor." It was a great guess.
Camile Mastellone called about the "mystery still a mystery," to put it to rest. She knew the real story. "It's the Boys & Girls Club Gala Benefit 2003. The After-School children were performing," she said.
George and Cindy Mudford of English Country Flowers e-mailed their answer. "The mystery picture in the Aug. 28 issue is a performance by Oyster Bay Boys and Girls Club Members at the Gala held at the club in April this year. I think I helped put up the white lattice panels at the back. We always have a great time at the party," she said.
Several people last week identified the lattice panels as being similar to those at the First Presbyterian Church. Camile Mastellone said the panels they used belong to the club itself.
There are still answers coming through from the Aug. 15 picture, We opened an e-mail from Regina (Brandt) Rettig saying "It's probably inside the American Legion Building."
We love hearing from all our readers. Thank you each and every one for your interest and your answers!
