The United States Power Squadron is a nationally recognized non-profit organization dedicated to safe boating through public education. "The Oyster Bay Squadron has provided a safe boating program for over 30 years to the residents of Bayville, Brookville, East Norwich, Hicksville, Jericho, Laurel Hollow, Oyster Bay, Oyster Bay Cove, Plainview and Syosset," said Ronald Ferina, Squadron Education Officer, Oyster Bay Power Squadron.

The Oyster Bay Power Squadron will next offer Boat Smart, a basic safe boating course. Classes will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and continue for three consecutive Tuesdays ((9/09, 9/16, 9/23). Safe boating is for beginners and experienced boaters alike. Successful completion of this informative course may entitle you to valuable insurance discounts and a Safe Boating Certificate recognized by New York State for the operation of personal water raft.

Furthermore, after completing Boat Smart you could be eligible to become a member of the Power Squadron, enabling you to take advantage of the full education program.

In addition, OBPS will be holding a NYS Young Boaters Course beginning Oct. 4 and ending Oct. 25. This course enables young boaters between the ages of 12 to 18 to obtain their NYS Boating Certification.

All classes are scheduled to be held at the Water Front Center in Oyster Bay. All must be pre-registered! To reserve a seat, contact Ron at 935-0475 or at OBPSSEORLF@netscape.net. For more information about the Oyster Bay Power Squadron and future classes and/or events, call 622-1356 or visit www.usps.org/localusps/oysterbay. Safe boating is for everyone.
