Last Weeks Mystery Picture
|
With all the interest in the Aug. 15 mystery picture, last week's mystery picture went unanswered. It is after all vacation time, and we are all relaxing! We received an e-mail from former resident Sandra E. Hunt. She wrote, "I don't know what the event was, but that is a picture of the inside of the now defunct American Legion hall located on South Street.
"I spent many fun evenings at the 'Teen Club' that was hosted there in the '70s as well as had my wedding reception there in 1976. I have many fond memories of growing up in Oyster Bay while my father Rev. David Hunt, pastored Hood A.M.E. Zion Church there. I try to get back as often as possible, for a little taste of 'home'. If my memory serves me correctly, the large portrait on the wall between the flags is Rough Rider Teddy Roosevelt."
Beatrice Cardinale of Locust Valley said, "I did live in Oyster Bay a few years back and I remember going to the Republican rally the night before Election Day with my father-in-law who was an executive committeeman. It looks like Legion building to me. Judging from the hats, I see, we wore them to the rallies. I hope they leave that building where it is."
Rosemary Mavros said, "I remember I used to work at the polls there for voting. That's Theodore Roosevelt's picture right in the middle of the wall."
Charlie Doering called and said, "The picture is of the Legion Hall that we are desperately trying to save from the wrecking ball. The picture is now at the Matinecock Lodge. The picture was given to them for safe-keeping, I understand." TR was a mason and was a member of the Matinecock Lodge on East Main Street.
"I'm just looking at this week's newspaper and saying to myself, I have to call. I haven't been there in a long while, but it looks like the inside of the American Legion hall on South Street in Oyster Bay," said Harold Flower via E-mail.
Levon Ashby also sent an e-mail saying, "Don't print this if it's wrong, but I believe, just by the picture in the background of Theodore Roosevelt, that the scene must be taking place in the old American Legion building on South Street. It is a building that I last entered some 50 plus years ago. If it's not TR, I'll have to stick my head in the sand again," said Mr. Ashby is absolutely correct on his identification of the place and the picture.
"It's the American Legion building. It is so identifiable with TR sitting dead center in the picture. Anyone who's been a Republican for 20 years would know that. That's me sitting in the back on the left. Ray Starke is on my right and Dottie Brandt is sitting in front of us. Joe Colby was running for supervisor then, and was giving his speech," said Frank Melillo.
Tanya Walker called and said, "It's the American Legion building on South Street where the Republicans used to have their campaign headquarters."
We also got a call, too late for publication about the Aug. 7 mystery picture. Richard Downing called Monday night, after we had gone to press. He said the picture was taken on Route 25A in the vicinity of Sugar Tom's Road.
Most importantly, we forgot to credit that photograph to Robert Fitzpatrick, our apologies. The picture of the American Legion Hall we believe was taken by former Oyster Bay Enterprise Pilot editor Susan Francy, a great photographer.
