Joan E. Stapleton (nee Tilford), 75, of Hendersonville, NC, formerly of Bayville, died on July 11, 2003. Wife of J. Howard. Daughter of the late John M. and Gwendolyn Tilford of Bayville. Sister of John M. Tilford Jr. of Huntington. Also survived by one niece, Gail Peach; two grandnieces and two grandnephews. Arrangements were made by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Edward R. Greeff, of Mill Neck, died peacefully at home on July 26, 2003 at the age of 93 following a year-long heart illness. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth D. Greeff; three stepchildren, Margaret G. Stanton of Quogue, Elizabeth G. Donohue of Pittsburgh, PA and Clinton Gilbert Jr. of Vero Beach, FL. His survivors also include 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four nieces and a nephew.
A graduate in 1929 of (now) Choate-Rosemary Hall; in lieu of college he became a merchant seaman, traveling the earth's oceans. In the 1930s, he joined Adams & Beck (members of the NYSE) and became a partner. During WWII he served as a naval officer in the South Pacific, commendated for skippering a sub-chaser. Before and after the war, he was a renowned international sailor, and in 1952 was navigator of Argyll, winner of the Bermuda Race that year. Owner of Riffin, a Sparkman and Stephens designed yawl; in later years he raced and cruised European and Caribbean waters. For many years he held the record for most Bermuda races sailed, going back to 1928. He was a member of the NY Yacht Club, Cruising Club of America, Seawanhaka Yacht Club, Piping Rock Club and several international yacht squadrons and clubs. Carmen Berlangero, 78, of Locust Valley, died on Aug. 3, 2003 after a long illness. He was a devoted member of the Brookville Country Club, past president of the Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce, Oyster Bay Lions Club and was a WWII veteran serving in the US Marine Corps. William M. Weiler, of Oyster Bay, died suddenly on Aug. 3, 2003. He was an outstanding cantor and leading choir member of St. Dominic's Church for over 30 years. Husband of Eileen (Egan).
