The weekend of June 28 and 29 will long be remembered as proof positive that this is a great community that supports its great organizations. The Doubleday Babcock Senior Center, the Friends of the Bay and the WaterFront Center, all held great fundraisers this past weekend.

On Saturday, June 28, the Sagamore Yacht Club held a benefit for Friends of the Bay. They held their fifth annual Friends of the Bay Race that started around noon and ended somewhere around 6 p.m. The wind wasn't cooperating! The Christeen was the Race Committee Boat for the FOB race.

The whole day was a great feast for the spectators. The music was wonderful and after so much rain the sun was greatly appreciated. The club created a great fund-raising journal and after the costs of the event are deducted, FOB will get a substantial donation. Louise Harrison, FOB director and Jack Williams were there amongst their supporters. The Sagamore Yacht Club event was chaired by C. Christian Lorenzen, David Hertz and Carolyn Core. Horst Ankerman was the racing chair.

On Sunday afternoon, the Doubleday Babcock Senior Center ran their third annual Day at the Races, held at Belmont Race Track. It is the summer fundraiser for DBSC and was chaired again by Dr. Susan Peterson. It was a lot of fun for everyone.

Also scheduled for Sunday was the WaterFront Center Regatta. It was a day on the bay for enjoying the full range of fun, from races, to relays, to a great clambake at 7 p.m. under a giant white tent. It included an auction with great items including a patchwork quilt by Jennifer Sappell, "mother" at the WaterFront Center. The WFC of course was the beneficiary of the event. Jamie Deming and Bill Quinn were the benefit co-chairs; Woody Glenn was the race committee chair and Cynthia Coudert was the clambake chair and Jack Bernstein was the racing promotion chair.

So there you have it. The rain let up a bit and the sun finally shone on this bright weekend, and fortunately local organizations had all taken those days for their benefits.

By now you know June was a record breaking month for rain. It had more rain than ever recorded for a June since the country started documenting the weather. Congratulations to all the chairpeople.
