Bay Day proved you can have as much and maybe even more fun in the rain than you can in sunshine. Bay Day, June 7 was overcast and rainy but that was only an outside manifestation as the WaterFront Center hosted the event held on the western waterfront: Beekman Beach and the former Jakobson Shipyard site.
The hearts of the community were bright and shiny as they watched and took part in the Anything That Floats Race. Beekman Beach was filled with a great crowd of parents and children; teachers and students; Scouts and Scout leaders; rowers, kayakers and the Coast Guard Auxiliary and even the crew of the Mystic Whaler.
It was just a great day on the bay.
Rob Crafa was enthusiastic and full of fun as he helped the race get under way. He was even more fun as he announced the awards asking a rhetorical question: "It doesn't matter who won, does it?" The crowd agreed as he tossed out the prizes to the contestants. The winning Girl Scout Troop No. 203 will all get a free ride aboard the Christeen this season, he announced.
Next week the Enterprise Pilot will have awesome pictures of the event taken by several local photographers. "And mark you calendars for Bay Day, the Sunday after Memorial Day next year," said Mr. Crafa. If you have any influence about keeping away rain: that would be good too. -DFK
