Edward B. (Woody) Ryder, a past president of the Oyster Bay Historical Society said, "It looks like a Hessian re-enactor (right) at a Revolutionary War Encampment," which was sponsored by the Oyster Bay Historical Society and coordinated by OBHS Director Tom Kuehhas.
The photograph was taken by Robert Fitzpatrick of East Norwich. "Andrew is dressed as one of the Queens Rangers, a British group that occupied Raynham Hall during the Revolution. The other men could be Hessians or Highlanders, other groups that fought with the British," said Lisa Cuomo, educational director of Raynham Hall Musem. The man captaining the group is former Raynham Hall Director Andrew Batten who is currently the director of the Fraunces Tavern Museum. Raynham Hall is sponsoring a trip to New York City on Sept. 17 to visit the museum as well as Trinity Church. Call 922-6808 for information.
Billy Minicozzi identified the mystery picture as men in Civil War uniforms. He suggested the site was Sagamore Hill, where TR lived and died. (A very good guess, but not correct.)
Billy wished a happy birthday to his nephew Matthew Cloninger of Bayville who just turned 13.
On a sports note: Billy is hopeful that the New Jersey Nets will win the NBA title over the San Antonio Spurs. He is rooting for the N. J. Devils to win the Stanley Cup for the hockey championship.
