The overcast day was unlike the brilliant blue sky of September 11, 2001. A soft rain drizzled down on students, families and Oyster Bay High School administrators as they dedicated a bronze plaque in loving memory of those lost on September 11. The monument was dedicated to those in the Oyster Bay-East Norwich school family who lost a loved one in the attack on the Twin Towers.

Oyster Bay High School Principal Rebecca Quarm thanked all the volunteers who helped create the memorial to Oyster Bay High School related people who died on September 11. "This is a miserable day. It says a lot about you for coming out to dedicate this plaque," she said to the large grouping of students and family members. The Oyster Bay Chamber Singers began the ceremony by singing the Star Spangled Banner.

Oyster Bay High School Student Council advisor Sheila Matus said, "The heart of any community is its school; the heart of Oyster Bay High School is the Student Council. They are elected by their peers to lead in service projects. The Oyster Bay Student Council sought to honor these people." She read the names of the seven names listed on the plaque: Christopher Ciafardini, Wade Green, Brooke Jackman, James A. Kelly, Thomas Mahon, Edward Papas and Christopher Slattery. The Student Council raised the money needed for the memorial.

Ms. Matus thanked Woodstock Nursery for donating the stone and the labor for the monument. Student Council Vice President Brad Goldberg read a poem Immortality by Allison Rotmark. The Chamber Players sang again, and the flag was raised from half mast to freely flying above the crowd. A gentle wind caught the flag and unfurled it over the scene.

Several members of the Student Council were at the event. The council officers are: President Lauren Douglas, Vice President Brad Goldberg, Treasurer Jesse Abrahms, Secretary Danielle Labradorf and Historian Valerie Giambanco.
