The Long Island Scholastic Rowing Championships held on Saturday, May 3 at Centre Island Beach in Bayville was a big success. The Regatta was an invitational for Long Island's high school crew teams only. Eleven high school crew teams were in attendance at the Regatta (over 400 participants) including several teams local to Oyster Bay. The event has been held annually on the first weekend in May for the past several years. This year's regatta was co-sponsored by Sagamore Rowing Association and the Cold Spring Harbor High School Crew Team. Many thanks to the volunteers and to the TOB Parks & Recreation Dept., Village of Bayville, Bayville Fire Dept., Oyster Bay Constable, and the Nassau County Police Marine Patrol and Second Precinct for making this year's Regatta a pleasurable experience for the participants.
There were more than 30 events in this year's Regatta. Men's events and women's events were run separately and further divided into sculling, where the rower has one oar in each hand, or sweep, where the rower has one oar and uses both hands to pull the oar through the water.
