Applications are now being accepted for the 16th annual Vytra-TOBAY Triathlon, Long Island's largest triathlon, and one of the largest - and most athlete-friendly - multisports events in the country.
The date is Sunday, Aug. 17, the place is Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, the distances are a 1 kilometer swim in Oyster Bay Harbor, a 15 kilometer bike ride through Oyster Roosevelt Park up to the Planting Fields Aboretum and back to the exciting finish at Roosevelt Park. This is an event that can be mastered by anyone who is in reasonably good shape on a reasonable amount of training. It's a perfect event for first timers, and yet is challenging enough to satisfy the veteran triathlete.
The entry fee for the triathlon is only $40 if you register by May 31. Residents of the Town of Oyster Bay can take $5 off that price.
Not up to a Tri? The Vytra-TOBAY Triathlon also includes a team competition, so runners can talk to their swimming and biking buddies and come up with a team for the Vytra-TOBAY Tri-Relay. Team entry fees through May 31 is only $25 per team member ($3 discount for those who reside in the Town of Oyster Bay).
Feel good and do good at the same time - portions of the proceeds of this great event go to the Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Oyster Bay-based "Friends of the Bay."
The 2003 edition of the Tri will once again be co-hosted by the Town of Oyster Bay, through the good offices of Town Supervisor John Venditto, the public spirited corporate folks at Vytra Health Plans, and the Greater Long Island Running Club, with GLIRC's Steve Winkler serving as the director of the event once again.
For more information and/or entry booklets, call either the Greater Long Island Running Club office at 349-7646 or Diane Blanchard at the Town of Oyster Bay Recreation Department at 797-4125.
Not ready to "Tri"? Experience the event as a volunteer by calling Mindy Davidson at 520-9481. (Volunteers are most welcome - bring along your family members to help.)
