This past week there has been an editorial theme running around in our head that we would like to share. It has to do with responsibility, and especially, responsibility in a small town. When the Book Mark Café closed we had a feeling of being responsible: that we had always expected the Book Mark to be there when we needed it and didn't do our part to see that it would be around.

Each time we read about an author coming to the Book Mark for a book signing or the opportunity to have dinner with an author, we would be very excited by the idea, and wanted to attend. As it turned out, we were often too busy and didn't make the time, always assuming we would go the next time. We didn't realize that time would run out for the Book Mark.

What we realize now is that making Oyster Bay work is not something we can take for granted. If we like something and want to have it stay here, we have to be proactive and make sure to support it.

That is true now of the Doubleday Babcock Senior Center. They are going through a financial rough spot. They too have programs we like and plan to attend, eventually - when we have time. We realize now, that if we don't make the time, and support DBSC, we might again be left in a situation where their time has run out and when we are ready for them, they are not there.

Being a senior is something we all look forward to. We better all take an interest in seeing that DBSC is there when we need it. Living in a small town, there are responsibilities we all have to take seriously. If you feel as we do, we are sure you will take time to help DBSC keep its doors open for when you are ready for them.
