The Oyster Bay Lady Baymen's Varsity Basketball team finished off a successful season on Thursday, Feb. 13, with their last game against Friends Academy. After beginning the season with three straight losses, the Lady Baymen took their game to a new level. They went on a four-game winning streak in the middle of the season and won their last seven games. Each of their last three wins, coming against North Shore, Carle Place, and Friends Academy, were by 10 points or more. Oyster Bay finished with a 12-6 total record, with 11 wins and two losses in league play. The team competed in Conference V, Class C, where they played schools such as Cold Spring Harbor, Carle Place, North Shore, Friends Academy, East Rockaway, Malverne, Valley Stream North and Wheatley.

Oyster Bay played Friends Academy in their final season game. The Lady Baymen took control of the game from the beginning, as they opened up an eight-point lead at the end of the first quarter and continued to add to their lead in the third and fourth quarters. The final score was Oyster Bay 43, Friends Academy 27.

Oyster Bay coach Val Halesworth reflected positively on the season as a whole. "I thought we had a strong season this year for having young kids. We had some kids who had not even played on the varsity level and we did a good job coming tied for first."

The Lady Baymen were led by seniors Stephanie Pelling, Carlie Henin, Dominique Igoe, Kacee Papa, and sisters Katie and Cindy Daub. Katie Daub was Oyster Bay's leading scorer, averaging close to 13 points per game. With only a few graduating seniors this year, Daub considers Oyster Bay a young team that is in the process of rebuilding. She commented, "We've been beating the teams we've been playing, but we're always trying to get better to continue going on in our season."

For the Lady Baymen, this has been a prosperous rebuilding year. Due to their successes, Oyster Bay has made it to the County Championship. They will be playing East Rockaway, also tied for first place in Conference V. Oyster Bay lost to East Rockaway on Jan. 16, and the teams have not met since. The championship will be played on March 1 at Hofstra University.

Coach Halesworth has high hopes for next season, as she is counting on her trio of phenomenal freshmen to step up. "We will be very strong next year and hope to repeat as conference champions and get back to Hofstra." The championship game at Hofstra will be a homecoming to the Lady Baymen, who have taken the Class C championship six times in the last seven years.
