Over 180 children from the Oyster Bay community have registered to take part in three free baseball clinics held by the newly chartered Al Leiter Little League of Oyster Bay (ALLL). The first clinic held on Saturday, Jan. 18, was a resounding success as children gathered in the new gymnasium at the Oyster Bay High School to review their baseball skills. Doug Petersen, president of the Executive Board for ALLL said, "It was a great orientation for the kids and a great opportunity for them to work out in such a beautiful facility. Each week we will be concentrating on more detailed skill sets allowing the kids to be really prepared for spring baseball. Whether they were hustling around the bases or pitching at the two speed traps, they were all extremely enthusiastic about being here."
The coaching staff of the clinics awarded prizes to three players from each age group for exceptional play. The winners from week one were: In the 5 and 6 age group: Beth Ann Gallagher "All-Star," Nicholas Carbone "Super Hustler" and Michelle Morris "Golden Glove." In the 7,8 and 9 age group: Christopher Kelly "All Star," Matthew Drexler "Super Hustler" and Dillon Robinson "Golden Glove." In the 10, 11 and 12 age group: Joe Jazwinski "All-Star." Jake Robinson "Super Hustler" and Alex LoRusso "Golden Glove."
Alex LoRusso was very proud of his award saying, "This was my Dad's glove and I call it the vacuum."
Baseball gloves donated by Regent Sports were won by random drawing by Joe Jazwinski, Christopher Canadeo and Jillian Boccia.
The last free clinic will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Oyster Bay High School Gym using the following schedule: children ages 5 and 6 from 3 to 4 p.m.; children ages 7, 8 and 9 from 4 to 5 p.m. and children 10, 11 and 12 from 5 to 6 p.m. Registration for the upcoming spring season is also being held at the clinics and is discounted until Feb. 1.
