The newly chartered Al Leiter Little League of Oyster Bay will be holding its second and third free clinics on Saturday, Jan. 25, and Saturday, Feb. 1, from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Oyster Bay High School gymnasium. Registration will also be held for the Spring League to be played in Oyster Bay, which will give players the opportunity for higher level competition in state and regional tournaments as well as in the Little League World Series in world famous Williamsport, PA.
Al Leiter Little League of Oyster Bay has been granted a charter by Little League baseball beginning this year. To service a number of villages in the Oyster Bay area and to help attract more children to play Little League baseball, the committee has named the league after All-Star Pitcher Al Leiter. Doug Petersen, president of Al Leiter Little League of Oyster Bay, said that Mr. Leiter is a great role model for children and that the All Star player was flattered when approached about using his name.
"Anything I can do to help more kids play what I feel is the greatest game in the world, I am happy to do," said Mr. Leiter, who played for the Mets and the Yankees.
