Michael Leahy called to identify the Oct. 17 mystery picture and said, "It is the new row of stores on 25A in East Norwich, just west of Route 106." Right!
Billy Minicozzi called to say: "It's the shopping center right by the IHOP in East Norwich." He added, "I hope the weather is great for the Bayville Fire Company's Haunted House." He is looking forward to the Giants winning over the Angels in six games.
An e-mail arrived from Alan Dranow of Moraga, California whose motto is "Words for sale. Satisfaction guaranteed." He answered the Oct. 10 mystery picture.
He said: "Come to think of it, I don't think I ever replied to your (e-mail) question of whether or not I was related to the Dranow that's always in the Oyster Bay (Supervisor's 5 K) run. That's my mother, Dorothy Dranow the wonder woman! I say this because she walks about six miles a day, just recently received her master's degree (following on the heels of her bachelor's) and within the past two and a half years has become a grandmother three times over. ('Finally,' as she put it.) All this plus a positive attitude that's kept her going strong for...well, a lot of years. Okay, so here's my thought on the Mystery Picture: It was taken in front of what's now a drugstore in the Pine Hollow Shopping Center. I studied the photo for a while and was going to say the East Norwich Shopping Center by Blueberries, but I believe that the same view from the East Norwich Shopping Center wouldn't have the same hills or trees that can be seen in the background. Also, those look like bakery carts to me and there was indeed a bakery (still? don't know) in Pine Hollow. So: there's my guess - the Pine Hollow Shopping Center. Could I be right?"
He was right. The small carts now belong to Green Wagon which has just opened Midori, a Japanese restaurant. How delicious!
