Malachy Ryan, beloved husband and devoted father, died on May 23, 2002. Born in Thomondgate, Co. Limerick, Ireland, Malachy was the middle of 10 children. Pursuing the American dream he emigrated in 1948. As a veteran of the Korean War, he was honored with the Purple Heart. He married Kathleen Butler of NY in 1961. They raised five children in their Locust Valley home. He was honored in 2001 for his role in "Building Long Island University." Mal was employed at C.W. Post College for 39 years. He was active in the community and received the St. Patrick's Men's Club award for his work in the Glen Cove Parish. Malacy is survived by his wife, five children, James, Sean, Kathleen, Geraldine and Sheila, their spouses and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Nellie, Mary, Hanna, and brothers, James and Martin and the late John, Mike and Catherine. Arrangements were made by the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove.
Elizabeth (Lee) Coronesi, a lifelong resident of Oyster Bay, died on May 24, 2002. Wife of the late Louis. Mother of Helen Piriczy and James Coronesi. Garndmother of Louis and Danny. Dorothy J. Connell, of Locust Valley, died on May 26, 2002. Wife of the late Robert E. Sr. Mother of Robert E. Jr. (Beth), Patricia A. (Don) and Kevin P. (Denise). Sister of Peter J. Gisela Dowers, of Oyster Bay, died on May 26, 2002. Wife of the late Edward. Mother of Darryl (Anita) and the late Pamela. Arrangements were made by the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, Oyster Bay. Interment Calverton National Cemetery.
Frank J. Hollenbach, a mathematician and engineer, died on May 28, 2002 at North Shore University Hospital at Glen Cove. He was 86 years old and lived in Oyster Bay since 1972. As an engineering mathematician, he participated in development and design work on the Savannah River (H Bomb) Ordnance Plant and as a development engineer and mathematician on analog and Magnetic Amplifier Computers. He held several patents in these fields. During WWII, as an Army officer at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, he served as a development engineer on explosive devices and tested the battle trustworthiness of ordinance equipment.
In December 1954, he founded Magnetronics Controls Inc., an engineering company, and was its president and sole owner for 34 years; until the company became inactive upon his retirement in December of 1988. For the first 10 years, the company was active in control engineering for National Defense. During its last 20 years, the company performed engineering for Public Utilities and was a large supplier of consulting services for Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant.
Mr. Hollenbach was a professional engineer in the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. He attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (nights), after WWII, graduating with a B in electrical engineering along with credits in advanced math and physics. Before entering the Army, in WWII, he attended Cooper Union Night School of Engineering form June 1938 until September 1942, pursing undergraduate electrical engineering. He was a member of the Society of American Magicians, Veterans of the OSS, the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers and a Deacon for the First Presbyterian Church of Oyster Bay.
He served in the US Army from September 1942 to May 1946 with 27 months overseas, as a Bomb Disposal Officer, on OSS assignments and as a Military Government Engineering Officer assisting in De-Nazification and was responsible for rebuilding the German city of Offenbach. He participated in the campaigns for Normandy, Brittany and Central Germany and was wounded twice in France.
In 1966, Mr. Hollenbach helped the NYS Conservative Party organize Nassau County. He served as chairman and founder of two Conservative Clubs and was on the NC Committee (Conservative Party) for six years. He ran for the office of State Senator on the Conservative State Party ticket in 1996.
He was married to his wife Eleanor for 55 years and survived her. He is survived by five children, Doris Hollenbach of NYC, Paul Hollenbach of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, John F. Hollenbach of Oyster Bay, Kenneth Hollenbach of Lampeter, FL, and Catherine McLelland of Shreveport, LA; four grandchildren; brother and sister, Professor Robert Z. Hollenbach of Needham, MA, and Mary Fusco of Brentwood.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Oyster Bay Funeral Home. A memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church, Oyster Bay on June 1. It is the family's wish that instead of flowers, contributions be sent to Cumberland College, Williamsburg, KY 40769-6197 for scholarship grants to deserving Appalachian students.
