Harold Havekotte, past commander of the Quentin Roosevelt American Legion Post No. 4 is concerned about the fate of the American flags that have been flown since the September 11 attack.
Some flags are getting faded and torn and he is concerned that people won't know how to dispose of them properly. "They should be handled with respect," he said.
Every year the American Legion and the VFW ask residents to bring in any flags they feel are no longer presentable to them for disposal. Reginald Butt, past commander of the American Legion and the VFW and Vice Commander of the Nassau County American Legion said "There is presently a box at the Oyster Bay Public Library where people can leave their flags."
Both men said you can give the flags to any member of the VFW or American Legion.
Mr. Butt said if needed, you can call him at 922-7135 and he will arrange to have your flag picked up.
The two veterans groups hold a joint ceremony to retire American flags on the Saturday closest to Flag Day, June 14. It includes a rifle salute, burning the flags and putting the ashes out to sea. The veterans see that flags receive the respect they deserve.
