John DeJesu called from "downtown Oyster Bay," to say, "The photo is a new building on the site of the old Messera machine shop building on Spring Street. It was an old neighborhood of mine. I was born on the corner at 45 Shore Ave. That house burned down and a new one was built there.
"I came down Spring Street and saw the new building there on the site of the old machine shop, when I went to the Fourth of July parade," he said.
"It was Messera's and before that it was Hicks Machine shop, when I was a little boy. He was handicapped and ran the machine shop. He used
to teach us kids how to make different things.
A friend and I made a golf club with a wooden shaft and wooden head. He (Mr. Hicks) would make the mold and we would finish it off, sand, and coat it. I was 8 or 9-years old."
Interestingly, when Mr. DeJesu retired he refinished his family furniture: he worked refinishing the wood!
Speaking of working careers, the next call was from Anthony Testa, who had been a jeweler and repaired watches and is now retired. He was the Anthony of Anthony's Jewelry in Syosset, said Fran Raymond, our favorite fact checker, when we can't read our notes or identify a person in a photograph. Mr. Testa identified the mystery picture as Hicks.
Athony Testa, said, "I belong to the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Kiwanis Club, as treasurer. We could use members. We just gave a scholarship of $3,000 to Oyster Bay co-salutorian Barbie Huelser. The club earned the funds.
He recalled, "We used to sell the beer at the Oyster Fesitval. When we couldn't, we sold nonalcoholic beer and then pastry. The scholarship is named the Marce S. Sola Memorial Award in honor of a member of the Kiwanis Club.
Billy Minicozzi credited Billy MacNamara for giving him the correct answer to the mystery picture on Wednesday, July 11. "It's Rocky Messina's garage building." He added, "Any Bayville fireman who wants to help out for the picnic, please call the chairman Phil Baker at 628-1922."
Sports Note: Billy Minicozzi said," I hope the Yankees are going to the World Series if they keep going the way they are now. Hopefully the Jets and Giants will have a great year. He is looking forward to the beginning of the hockey season in October."
The photograph is of the newly renovated building of engineer Joe Heaney, whose company does environmental engineering.
