Obituaries

John S. Coddington, 37, formerly of Bayville, died on Oct. 6, 1999. Husband of Terry. Father of Erin. Son of Joanne and Thomas. Brother of Thomas (Carolyn), Michael (Anna) and Colette (John). Grandson of Marjorie Coddington and Johanna Durkee. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.

James Abbe, 87, of Brookville, died on Oct. 7, 1999. He was born in Lynchburg, VA and moved to NYC when he was six. He graduated from high school and joined his father in Paris assisting him as he photographed the fashion designer Pavlova and The Folies Bergere as well as others of the 1920s. He also went to Germany with his father and photographed Hitler and Goebels during their rise to power.

Mr. Abbe worked as a New York Times photographer in New York in 1934 covering Staten Island and then opened his own Manhattan studios. He became part of the arts community, working with Harper's Bazaar and capturing black and white images of Hollywood stars such as Vivien Leigh for magazines.

He opened two antique stores in 1961 in Oyster Bay and East Hampton. He also taught photography at Pratt Institute. A Quaker, he became a self-taught scholar of Shaker furniture, whaling artifacts, folk art and other early American furnishings he sold and procured himself.

Mr. Abbe is survived by his wife Kathryn; his children, James, Tom, Lucinda and Eli; and six grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. A memorial service will be held at Jericho Friends Meeting House on Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.

Theodore Raymond, of Oyster Bay, died on Oct. 7, 1999. Husband of the late Minnie. Father of Florence (Michael) Freedman. Grandfather of Justin and Lily. Brother of Beatrice Bernstein.

Ray Sunderland Jr., 85, of Locust Valley, died on Oct. 8, 1999. He was historian for the Village of Lattingtown and a member of Who's Who in the World. Husband of Joyce. Father of Joel W. Grandfather of Joel W. Jr. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery.

Dorothy J. Heeg, of Oyster Bay, died on Oct. 11, 1999. Wife of the late John Anthony. Mother of John Roger Heeg and Peggy Heeg-Novello. Arrangements were made by the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, Oyster Bay. Memorial service. Contributions can be made to the First Church of Christ Scientist, Boston, MA 02115.
