The first girls basketball season for the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Boys and Girls Club has ended with a big win as The Huskies enter the Nike Playoffs against Locust Valley.
This year the teams joined the Metro Swoosh Basketball League, sponsored by Nike, which got under way Jan. 4. There were ten teams; four teams in the 11-13-year-old division and six teams in the 8-10-year-old division.
The 8-10-year-old division was won by the blue team - The Huskies. They went undefeated with a record of 9-0. The girls were lead by the coaching team of Chris Feldman and Derick Oliver.
After just coming off a 16-0 undefeated season with our girls P.A.L. Basketball Team, this is like a piece of heaven on earth and our girls are our stars, said Coach Mike Glancy.
The girls are all third, fourth and fifth graders. They practice every Monday night and had games every Thursday night. With two team members dropping out at the very beginning of the season, we had only an eight girl squad, but with every obstacle put in front of them, the girls rose to the challenge and came out victorious, said Mr. Glancy.
"They worked hard together as a team and we achieved our goal. Every member of the team scored a basket this season," he said.
The team now advances onto the Nike Playoffs and are scheduled to play the Grenville Baker Boys and Girls Club of Locust Valley on Saturday, April 3.
We are looking forward to some big wins and the girls are looking forward to advancing to the Metro Swoosh League Finals in New York City.
The team members are: Olivia Oliver, 5th grade, 86 points; Brittany Murdock, 4th grade, 13 points; Niki Lievers, 4th grade, 8 points; Ashley Segura, 4th grade, 6 points; Michelle Eilicki, 3rd grade, 67 points; Danielle Capozzoli, 3rd grade, 18 points; Kate Applequist, 3rd grade, 14 points; Prianka Kazi, 3rd grade, 2 points.
Congratulations girls, on a job well done!
The girls and coaches had a great time participating in the club's first intramural league. Thanks to our volunteers, this program is a great success.
