Monsignor Alfred B. Soave, who spent the first 20 years of his priesthood at St. Dominic's in Oyster Bay, died on March 3, 1999 at the age of 77. He is survived by many cousins and relatives, and locally by his first cousin Lou Cazzola and family.

He was born on May 1, 1922 in Manhattan and lived in Astoria the first four years of his life. He went to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel grade school, graduated in June, 1936 and attended Francis Xavier Military High School. He graduated in June 1940, and enrolled in Fordham University for two years. He entered the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Lloyds Neck, in Sept. 1942 and was ordained on May 22, 1948 at St. James Pro-Cathedral.

Monsignor Soave's first assignment as a priest was to the parish of St. Dominic in Oyster Bay. He was made the assistant to the Rev. M. Vincent Short on June 10, 1948.

He had been ordained at St. James Pro-Cathedral on May 22 of that year.

He stayed at St. Dominic's for over 20 years. He was responsible for teaching Religion-Sacred Scripture, the Bible and Papal Encyclicals. He taught and interviewed every student who went through St. Dominic's during his stay there. Monsignor Soave was in charge of Religious Education for St. Dominic's and also for their mission at St. Gertrude's in Bayville.

He was one of the founders of the Nassau Suffolk Catholic High School Athletic Association (NSCHAA) and served as its president for seven years.

At St. Dominic's he was the Athletic Director and fund raiser for the athletic department.

He produced 12 Broadway shows with the youngsters from the school. He was appointed Chaplain of the Newman Club of SUNY in Oyster Bay before it moved to Stony Brook.

From 1960 to 1963 he was Religious Moderator of all the then Catholic High Schools in the Diocese.

His next assignment was as administrator of St. Andrew's Church in Sag Harbor. His responsibility was to lead the people into the Vatican II Church. He was named Pastor in 1972 and Assistant Dean on the South Fork.

He was assigned to the St. Hugh of Lincoln Church, Huntington Station in 1973 and appointed as a member to the Diocesan Board of Education and served for nine years.

He served on the Priest's Advisory Council for three years, was appointed Assistant Dean and then Dean of the Huntington Deanery (Morning Star).

In 1981 he served two terms on the Priest's Personal Assignment Board. The next year he was appointed Confessor to the seminarians of the Immaculate Conception Seminary for two years.

Pope John Paul II made him an Honorary Prelate on Feb. 2, 1985. The next year he worked on church renovation.

He entered a Sabbatical program and at its completion was asked to be in charge of senior priests at St. Pius X Residence in Uniondale. He was in charge of remodeling the high school, that became the senior residence, and installing an elevator to turn it into a suitable home for retired priests. In 1988 he was appointed Vicar for Senior Priests, wherever they lived.

He joined the Family Ministry Board and helped organize the Pre-Cana program. In 1987 the Bishop appointed him as the Coordinator of the Latin Tridentine Mass held monthly at St. Pius X Chapel.

His term of Vicar and Rector of St. Pius ended in 1996 and the next year ended his Latin Mass responsibility.

He retired on June 30, 1997 and became one of the retired priests at the St. Pius X Residence in Uniondale himself.

He celebrated his 50th Golden Jubilee, the anniversary of his ordination into the priesthood on May 22, 1998.

Services were held on Saturday, March 13 at the Cecari Funeral Home at 290 Post Ave., Carle Place.

A Mass of Transferral was celebrated on March 14 at Our Lady of Hope Church in Carle Place. The Funeral Mass was celebrated on March 15. The interment was at Holy Rood Cemetery.

John M. Addazio Jr., 52, of Mill Neck, died on Feb. 28, 1999. Son of Rose and the late John Sr. Brother of Jean Sivak (Michael). Uncle of Sharon Lavery (Rick). Also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins. Arrangements were made by the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, Oyster Bay. Funeral Mass at St. Dominic's RC Chapel. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery. Donations can be made to the LI Blood Bank.

Fred Phelps, of Singer Island, FL and Mill Neck, died on March 9, 1999. He served with the Canadian Army First Heavy AA Battery in the European Theater. He was a member of the Locust Valley Rotary, receiving the Paul Harris Fellowship for his works on Polio Plus, the Canadian Club of NY and the Metropolitan Club. Husband of Lillian. Father of Robert, William and Brian. Grandfather of Collin, Christina, Marc and Emily. Brother of Monica Haynes and Arthur. Father-in-law of Holly. Donations can be made to Polio Plus, c/o Locust Valley Rotary. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on LI at a later date.

Charlotte Hanophy (nee Gerlich), of Oyster Bay, died on March 12, 1999. Wife of the late Frank. Mother of James (Mary) and Charlotte (John) Purcell. Sister of Estelle Hawley. Grandmother of six. Great-grandmother of nine. Arrangements were made by the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, Oyster Bay. Funeral service at Christ Episcopal Church. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.

Phebe Ella Underhill Smith, of Muttontown, wife of the late Dr. Morley L. Smith of Hicksville, died on March 13, 1999 at her home in Muttontown. Mrs. Smith was an 11th generation descendant of Captain John Underhill, an early settler of LI. She was born and raised on LI on the Underhiull farm in Jericho. She was 92 years old.

Mrs. Smith was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. She was graduated from Friends Acadmey in Locust Valley and Cortland State Teachers College. Prior to her marriage to Dr. Smith, she was a home economics teacher in the Jericho Public Schools. She was active in the Preservation of LI Antiquities, the NYS Button Society and the Jerusalem Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was an officer of the Underhill Society of America and a charter member of the Garden City Community Club. She served on the board of trustees of Friends Academy for many years.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her son Morley Lyford Smith of Montreal, Quebec, Canada; her daughter Phebe Alice Apgar of Burke, VA; her sister Alice Underhill Mitchell; and her nephew Samuel Mitchell, both of East Williston. She is also survived by six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a loving family who will miss her greatly. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. A memorial service will be held at the Jericho Friends Meeting House in Jericho on April 3 at 2 p.m.
