Elston "Hubie" Swanson, of Stuart, FL, died on Dec. 27, 1998. He lived in Upper Brookville and Locust Valley for 36 years. Mr. Swanson was president of Instruments for Industry, a LI electronics firm. He was first chairman of the LI Chapter Young Presidents' Association; on the national, New England, NYS and LI YMCA boards; he received the LI Distinguished Leadership Award; was president of the LI Forum for Technology; and on the executive board of the LI Association. Mr. Swanson was an an ardent church worker, an experienced private pilot and SCUBA diver. He sailed across the Atlantic in a 48 foot yawl. He is survived by his wife Helga; his daughter, Dr. Elaine Turner and her husband David of Richmond, VA and their children Petra and Paul; and his son, Mark and his wife Robin and their child, Disa of Centerport. Arrangements were made by Treasure Coast Cremation, Stuart. Interment Brookville Cemetery. Donations can be made to the YMCA or the Sea Cliff Chapel.
Mary O'Rourke (nee Kydd), 99, of Locust Valley, died on Dec. 29, 1998. Wife of the late John. Mother of Ann Finnegan, William Don O'Rourke and John D. O'Rourke. Grandmother of Timothy O'Rourke, Jean Fletcher, Susan and Kathlenn Finnegan. Great-grandmother of Brennan and Baylee O'Rourke. Herman H. York, of Upper Brookville, died on Jan. 11, 1999. Husband for 53 years of Loretta H. Father of Kathleen A. and Richard C. (Stephanie). He was retired from architectural practice as a specialist in housing design (over 3/4 million homes have been built from York blueprints). In 1981 Mr. York was inducted into the National Housing Hall of Fame in Washington DC. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, the First Presbyterian Church of Oyster Bay and a member emeritus of the Greater NY Advisory Board of the Salvation Army of which he was an active volunteer for 43 years. He served as a director emeritus of Jamaica Savings Bank. Arrangements were made by the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, Oyster Bay. Memorial service at at the LI Lutheran High School Chapel.
