Ebullient team spirit was the driving stroke as the White Team of the Incorporated Villages Association Team Tennis at C.W. Post won the United States Tennis Association USA Team Tennis Nassau County and Long Island Regional Championships.
Early last month, at the county championship in Glen Cove, IVA Team Tennis' White Division, for ages 10 - 14, bested its opponents, comprised of 10 other teams from Nassau County, while IVA Team Tennis' Blue Division, ages 13 - 18, rallied to become Nassau County's runner-up.
On Aug.14, in the USA Team Tennis Regional playoffs, held at Hempstead Lake State Park, the IVA team's White Division defeated the Suffolk County champs.
IVA Team Tennis went on to compete in the USTA Eastern Sectional play offs, held in Schenectady, on Aug. 22 and 23.
In matches against the Section Regional champs from the Northern, Western, Southern and Metro Divisions, the IVA team advanced to Sunday's finals after a dramatic come-from-behind victory in Saturday's round robin elimination. IVA, the youngest team in competition, made up for lack of experience with remarkable team bonding. The team roster included the meet's youngest boy player Adam Lanza, 10; and youngest girl Elizabeth Kobak, 10; Lauren Sadaka, 11; Caren Seenauth, 12; and Casey Seenauth, 14.
The "Fannywhammers," as the team dubbed itself, charged into competition with equal measures of fire and fun. Developing tournament toughness and strategic play during the summer competition was made fun by coaches Larry Masucci, Ron Seenauth, Stu Kobak and Dorothy Kobak.
IVA Team Tennis at C.W. Post, the runner-up to Northern in the finals, was only one set away from capturing the Sectional Championship. The players' successful experience competing as a tennis team brought a new level to the game for all of them.
