Just by chance, I happened to photograph the St. Dominic Girls tennis team as they were about to start practicing at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park courts. The newspaper also covered the St. Dominic CYO games that take place at the same public park.
Monsignor Charles Ribaudo has been telling local residents that there is a need for fields for St. Dominic's students. Just by chance, covering local news, I saw for myself, and you can too, that there is a need.
The need is not for a small field, but a sports complex that will allow several sports teams from St. Dominic's schools to use fields, at the same time, after school. A letter to the editor suggests that a trade could occur between the Bermingham site and the Muttontown site where Monsignor Ribaudo's Field of Dreams is proposed.
That is like telling your neighbors they should divorce their spouses and marry each other! The Bermingham site is in contract for sale and the money from it is scheduled to go toward needed work at the Roosevelt Elementary School. It is needed money for a district that gets no funding for capital projects.
As for the residents of Muttontown, I hope they come to terms with the issue. The plan for fields is not unlike the present use of the site as a farm - lots of greenery. As a local resident I would prefer to see fields rather than more development along 25A.
It's a new idea for the area. It always takes time for people to get used to something different. I hope the community can see it as a benefit and not a liability.
