John DeJesu called from downtown Oyster Bay to identify the photograph in the Aug. 27 issue of the "Enterprising Pilot." He said, "It's Bay Street, south of Commander Oil. The building, where the Kahler brothers now have North Shore Fire Finishing, used to be Jack Fox's Trout Pond Inn. Inside, in the lobby, (it wasn't much inside, just a regular little bar), he had a fountain with real trout swimming in it. Left of the driveway is Theodore Memorial Park." Theodore Roosevelt is said to have visited the trout pond, which some have described as a well.
Billy Minicozzi said, "Its an old house, right down in the area where Commander Oil is located."
He called the next day with a more definitive answer: "It's behind Oyster Bay Pump Works and the old Commander Oil garage - looking toward the Flower property and behind you is the railroad turntable."
Billy said the information came from Big Mike, who has lived in Oyster Bay for 40 years and is an Oyster Bay fireman.
Thomas Power too called the paper by its name from years ago, "The Enterprising Pilot." He said, "It's Bay Avenue, across from Commander Oil, in the better section of Oyster Bay," he quipped. "It looks like an undeveloped area down by the water on Bay Street, in the area where the Oyster Bay Pump Works is."
Jamie Van Dyke said, "It's the alley way behind North Shore Fire Equipment down by the railroad track." Short, sweet and succinct!
