slug: rowing winner 8/13 Oyster Bay Jason Moskowitz, National Champion sub head SRA Has Winner in USRowing Club National Championships By D.F. Karppi Jason Moskowitz, a sophomore at Friends Academy, won the national championship in the Single Scull on Aug. 1, representing the Sagamore Rowing Association of Oyster Bay. It is his second year of rowing. The event, the USRowing Club National Championships, formerly known as the American National Championships, was held on Lake Onandaga in Syracuse, New York. Jason, a Glen Cove resident, was the first American (after one rower from Peru and one from Canada) in the Junior MenŐs B Category: up to 16 years of age. His time was 8:03.2. He trains in Oyster Bay Harbor. He raced against boys from Chile, Canada and from many states in the US. Jason also has a silver medal from racing a Double Scull in the Junior MenŐs B Category, with Nick Cerrone of Cold Spring Harbor High School. Both competed for the Sagamore Rowing Association this summer. In the spring scholastic season they compete for their own schools. Mr. Moskowitz placed third in another race this year with his Friends Academy partner, Tim Calise of Manhasset. The boys won third place, a bronze medal, in the Junior Boys Double at the Scholastic Championships held on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey in May. JasonŐs coach Peter Bisek said, ŇJason is one of the hardest working and most determined rowers I have had in all 10 years of coaching at Friends Academy. With Tim, together, they could challenge the best in the country.Ó And... Oyster Bay Harbor has been good to rowers. Last spring the Chaminade High School team won the New York State Team Novice Championship in their Eight (scull), and they are kids who have just started rowing, said Andy Kraus, a member of the Sagamore Rowing Association. ŇItŐs nice that good things are happening there.Ó This is the first year for the Sagamore Rowing Association in Oyster Bay, after returning after more than a decade. Currently they are running an adult rowing program for local residents. caption - 1 Jason Moskowitz, rowing on Lake Onandago.
