Bayville/Locust Valley School District Offers Drivers Education Driver Education will be offered during the fall semester to 11th and 12th grade high school students who are residents of Locust Valley Central School District. Students in a public or private school are eligible to enroll in the driver education program. Students residing in the district but who attend secondary schools other than Locust Valley High School will be accepted into the program according to the same criteria as students from Locust Valley High School. High school graduates are not eligible. All applicants must be at least 16 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 1998. Applicants will be enrolled according to their date of birth, oldest first, with the exception that seniors shall be enrolled before juniors. Applications for preregistration will be available in the Senior High Office beginning Monday, Aug. 24 and must be returned to Mr. Barlow by Friday, Sept. 4. Students of Locust Valley High School will have these forms mailed home to them. Residents who do not attend Locust Valley High School must present proof of residency, age and grade. These documents may be presented during the hours of 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a mandatory meeting for all pre-registered students on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 2:45 p.m. in the senior high cafeteria. Class assignments will be distributed at this time. To qualify for a blue card, there can be no absences. Bayville Kids Use Imagination Kindergartners Build Stories With Blocks at Bayville Elementary Kindergartners in Meryle Alstadter's class at Bayville Elementary are participating in a program that develops their critical thinking and problem-solving skills through imaginative thought processes. With the help of ESL teacher Laura Marcario, the class created a story using character such as tigers and giraffes. Students developed the beginning of a story, were presented with problems, and used building blocks to help find solutions to their adventure. Swim-A-Cross 9th Annual Red Cross Bayvillian Renata Maimone, 81, Will Swim Oyster Bay Harbor Again Swimmers of all ages and abilities will join the American Red Cross in Nassau County by swimming in its 9th Annual Swim-A-Cross, ÒColleen Patricia Keller Memorial Swim.Ó The Swim-A-Cross, a one-mile swim across Oyster Bay Harbor, will take place on Friday, Aug. 9, with check-in at 1 p.m. at Centre Island Beach in Bayville. There will be music on the beach for swimmers and spectators. No pets will be allowed to swim! There is no time limit or age limit to finish the swim. To prove that, 81-year-old Renata Maimone of Bayville has been participating in the swim since it began nine years ago. Also joining the spectators will be double gold medalist, Lynn McConville. Ms. McConville of Laurel Hollow won her medals as a USA swimmer in the late 1960s. She will be displaying her medals at the event. Sponsors of the swim include: State Bank of Long Island, Fortunoff, J.C. Penney, Roosevelt Field; Lufthansa German Airlines, Speedo Authentic Fitness, Waldbaum's, Old Brookville; IBEW Local Union No. 1049, The Food Basket, Bayville; and the Robert Keller Family of Oyster Bay. Throughout the course, there are several surfboards and boats manned by lifeguards where swimmers can rest if needed. To get a registration form and sponsor sheet call the Red Cross at 747-3500, ext. 228. A $20 registration fee is required along with a minimum of $50 in pledges. Now is the time to sign up and start to get sponsors so the Red Cross can reach its goal of $20,000. Prizes are awarded to those swimmers who raise the most money. Red Cross receives no government funding and relies solely on the community for support. Sept. 4 and 5 White Elephant Sale The Village Church of Bayville, 9 Mountain Ave., Bayville, hosts a White Elephant Sale on Friday, Sept. 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Available are like new and used items, tools, collectibles, childrenÕs toys and more, at this indoor garage sale.
