I wish to announce my candidacy for re-election to the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Board of Education. Having served on the school board for the last four years, currently as vice-president, I am ready to continue my commitment to board service and to the children of our school district. I have worked hard to make positive contributions. I have sought to maintain and strengthen educational program quality, with an eye to cost-effective utilization of staff, facilities and resources. I now ask for your support for the following reasons:

  • The school district is in a state of transition. A new superintendent will be assuming responsibilities in August 1998. In September 1999, the 7th and 8th grades will be moving to the high school, and the third grade will be moving to Vernon School. Now, more than ever, during this time of transition, it is imperative that the board of education have individuals serving that have the experience, knowledge and skills necessary to implement these changes in a smooth, efficient manner.

  • My day-to-day contact with members of the community keeps me responsive to the concerns of our residents. As director of the Oyster Bay Cooperative Playschool and as an active volunteer with the youth in my church, I know firsthand what parents are seeking in the education of their children.

  • Over the last four years, I have devoted the time and energy to attend school board training, workshops, conferences and visitations to many other school districts in order to give me the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions. This has given me the perspective of focusing on the "big picture" rather than a myopic viewpoint. Capitalizing on these capabilities for a second board term makes good sense, for both effectiveness and continuity.

Much has been accomplished during my board service, but I am not complacent. I recognize that there still are serious issues to be resolved and that more needs to be done. It is my goal, if re-elected, to continue to build confidence in our schools by championing our successes and addressing and correcting our weaknesses in an open, honest, positive, and collaborative atmosphere.

To that end, I ask for your support on May 19. I also ask that you support my fellow board member, School Board President Lou Kaplan, in his bid for re-election. If you have any questions concerning my candidacy, please call me at 922-2229.
